What is Fewshell?

Fewshell is a human-gated, collaborative AI terminal agent. It runs on your server and syncs state directly across your desktop and mobile clients — no cloud service required. Every command is staged for your review. Nothing executes until you say so.

Modern LLMs excel at terminal tasks and keep getting better — but letting an autonomous agent run shell commands against production infrastructure is too risky. Fewshell gives you the AI leverage while keeping a human in the loop.

Key Features

Human-gated — AI assists, you approve. No command runs without explicit confirmation. There is no autonomous mode — it can't be accidentally enabled or misconfigured.

Self-hosted — The agent runs on your server. Clients connect directly over SSH tunnel.

Real-time sync — Snippets, prompts, and settings sync across desktop and mobile with no cloud service needed.

Collaborative — Multiple engineers can join a session for real-time incident response.

Multi-project / multi-session — Organize infrastructure into projects, each with multiple concurrent sessions and settings.

Shell snippets — Quick-access command templates for common operations. Snippets also give the AI context about your infrastructure.

Custom system prompts — Tailor the AI behavior per project to match your infrastructure and workflows.

Secrets management — Secrets are stored in the client device keychain and automatically redacted from history. Never stored on disk or sent to LLM.

Session history & export — Full audit trail of every session. Export for postmortems, compliance, or experiment tracking.

BYOM — Bring your own model, or use any OpenAI/Claude-compatible endpoint. Self-host or connect to your preferred provider.

Use Cases

Incident response — DevOps and sysadmins investigate logs, triage alerts, and perform root cause analysis from any device.

ML labs — Monitor, restart, or adjust training runs and rollouts. Troubleshoot GPU nodes and pipelines via shell commands.

Infrastructure health — Check system state, diagnose issues, and tune performance across your fleet.

Serverless & cloud CLI — Works with serverless and cloud infrastructure through AWS, gcloud, Azure, or any CLI — for when you need hands-on access beyond what IaC covers.*

Note: For serverless, you need to run one micro instance that hosts the agent and has the CLI installed.

Use the Test Connection button, if all works, hit save.

NOTE: If you are on a LAN, behind a NAT or VPN, you may need to update the IP address in the dialog.

How it works:

The client generates a public-private SSH key pair.

The public key is pulled by the installation+pairing script using the one-time 6 digit code. (We use a simple service to relay your public key.)

Your new public key is added to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on your server. Private key is kept on the keychain on the client device.

If you prefer not using our relay, you can manually generate the key pair and paste the private key into the SSH tunnel dialog on the app.

Configure the settings, test until works, save.

Settings Scope

Fewshell settings can be configured at two levels, similar to VS Code's User/Workspace settings:

User — Applied across all projects.

Per-Project — Override global settings for a specific project.

Per-project settings always take precedence over global settings.

Project Settings

Each project can be configured with:

SSH Tunnel — Host, port, and SSH key or password. You can reuse the tunnel setting for multiple projects.

Secrets — Allows managing the encrypted credentials and API keys. These are stored in the OS keychain. When running commands, you can select from a list of secrets you defined to pass to the command as environment variables. The server does not persist these secrets to disk and will redact them from the conversation history.

The list of secret variable names are passed to the system prompt
for the LLM. This allows better understanding of context and
for the LLM to guess which secrets to pre-fill when requesting
to execute a command.

NOTE: The LLM can never see the contents of the secrets, only the names.

Secrets will automatically synchronize between your authenticated, connected devices as long as these devices are connected to the server at the same time.

The Secrets page will also display internal/system secrets such as SSH private key used by your app.

AI Models - You can configure one or more models for each project and switch between them as needed. When you configure a model endpoint with an API key, it will show up in the Secrets
page.

Snippets - You can define frequently used commands, long command examples or proprietary commands. These get passed to the context.

Quick Prompts - Frequently-used prompts. Eg "Get the last 30 minutes of error logs from cloud watch logs"

Agent Instructions - This is the system prompt that is passed to the session. It is scoped as both, User setting and Project setting. You can combine both into one prompt such that
user setting prompt is prepended with the project setting prompt.
For example, the user setting prompt might have the general instruction, while the Project setting would contain specific instructions for the infrastructure and systems that you use for that project.

Fewshell provides secure storage for sensitive values like API keys, passwords, and tokens. Secrets are encrypted at rest and can be scoped globally or per-project.

Adding Secrets

Navigate to Project Settings → Secrets.

Select User Secrets or Project Secrets tab as desired.

Tap Add User Secret or Add Project Secret.

Enter a name of the environment variable. Eg
GOOGLE_API_KEY
.
NOTE: Only valid UNIX environment variable name characters are allowed.

You can enable or disable secret visibility. NOTE: The actual secret content is never visible to the agent. Only the name of the secret is visible and whether it can be used.

Using Secrets in Sessions

Secrets are available during shell sessions. The agent is aware of configured secrets (by their names) and can reference them when composing commands. The system will never expose the values in the chat history.

CAUTION: Shell commands and shell scripts that you use on your system can potentially leak secrets by writing them to log files or exposing them in the process list. While fewshell itself protects its commands and redacts the secrets from history, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure their host is a trusted system and that the scripts and tools they run will not expose secrets to other users of the system or the internet.

Security

Secrets are encrypted using platform-native secure storage.

Values are never logged or stored in plain text by Fewshell.

Secrets are transmitted to servers only over encrypted SSH tunnel.

information, such as your IP address, browser and device

You can opt out of allowing us to collect this

understand how they collect, use and share your personal
information, and how you can set your privacy
preferences on their sites and apps.

5. How long do we keep your information?

In Short: We keep your information for
as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in
this privacy notice unless otherwise required by law.

We will only keep your personal information for as long
as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this
privacy notice, unless a longer retention period is

the user's account.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to
process your personal information, we will either delete
or anonymize such information, or, if this is not
possible (for example, because your personal information
has been stored in backup archives), then we will
securely store your personal information and isolate it
from any further processing until deletion is possible.

6. How do we keep your information safe?

and organizational security measures designed to protect
the security of any personal information we process.
However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure
your information, no electronic transmission over the
Internet or information storage technology can be
guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or
guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other
unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat
our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or
modify your information. Although we will do our best to
protect your personal information, transmission of
personal information to and from our Services is at your
own risk. You should only access the Services within a
secure environment.

However, please note that this will not affect the

service requests, or for other non-marketing purposes.

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and
mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT")
feature or setting you can activate to signal your
privacy preference not to have data about your online
browsing activities monitored and collected. At this
stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and
implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we
do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any
other mechanism that automatically communicates your
choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for
online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the
future, we will inform you about that practice in a
revised version of this privacy notice.

We reserve the right, but not the obligation, to: (1)

property and to facilitate the proper functioning of the

14. Privacy Policy

We care about data privacy and security. Please review

16. Term and Termination

These Terms of Use shall remain in full force and effect
while you use the Site. WITHOUT LIMITING ANY OTHER
PROVISION OF THESE TERMS OF USE, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT
TO, IN OUR SOLE DISCRETION AND WITHOUT NOTICE OR
LIABILITY, DENY ACCESS TO AND USE OF THE SITE (INCLUDING
BLOCKING CERTAIN IP ADDRESSES), TO ANY PERSON FOR ANY
REASON OR FOR NO REASON, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION
FOR BREACH OF ANY REPRESENTATION, WARRANTY, OR COVENANT
CONTAINED IN THESE TERMS OF USE OR OF ANY APPLICABLE LAW
OR REGULATION. WE MAY TERMINATE YOUR USE OR
PARTICIPATION IN THE SITE OR DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT AND ANY
CONTENT OR INFORMATION THAT YOU POSTED AT ANY TIME,
WITHOUT WARNING, IN OUR SOLE DISCRETION.

If we terminate or suspend your account for any reason,
you are prohibited from registering and creating a new
account under your name, a fake or borrowed name, or the
name of any third party, even if you may be acting on
behalf of the third party. In addition to terminating or
suspending your account, we reserve the right to take
appropriate legal action, including without limitation
pursuing civil, criminal, and injunctive redress.

17. Modifications and Interruptions

We reserve the right to change, modify, or remove the
contents of the Site at any time or for any reason at
our sole discretion without notice. However, we have no
obligation to update any information on our Site. We
also reserve the right to modify or discontinue all or
part of the Site without notice at any time. We will not
be liable to you or any third party for any
modification, price change, suspension, or
discontinuance of the Site.

We cannot guarantee the Site will be available at all
times. We may experience hardware, software, or other
problems or need to perform maintenance related to the
Site, resulting in interruptions, delays, or errors. We
reserve the right to change, revise, update, suspend,
discontinue, or otherwise modify the Site at any time or
for any reason without notice to you. You agree that we
have no liability whatsoever for any loss, damage, or
inconvenience caused by your inability to access or use
the Site during any downtime or discontinuance of the
Site. Nothing in these Terms of Use will be construed to
obligate us to maintain and support the Site or to
supply any corrections, updates, or releases in
connection therewith.

18. Governing Law

These Terms of Use and your use of the Site are governed
by and construed in accordance with the laws of the
State of California applicable to agreements made and to
be entirely performed within the State of California,
without regard to its conflict of law principles.

19. Dispute Resolution

Informal Negotiations

To expedite resolution and control the cost of any
dispute, controversy, or claim related to these Terms of
Use (each "Dispute" and collectively, the “Disputes”)
brought by either you or us (individually, a “Party” and
collectively, the “Parties”), the Parties agree to first
attempt to negotiate any Dispute (except those Disputes
expressly provided below) informally for at least thirty
(30) days before initiating arbitration. Such informal
negotiations commence upon written notice from one Party
to the other Party.

Binding Arbitration

If the Parties are unable to resolve a Dispute through
informal negotiations, the Dispute (except those
Disputes expressly excluded below) will be finally and
exclusively resolved by binding arbitration. YOU
UNDERSTAND THAT WITHOUT THIS PROVISION, YOU WOULD HAVE
THE RIGHT TO SUE IN COURT AND HAVE A JURY TRIAL. The
arbitration shall be commenced and conducted under the
Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration
Association ("AAA") and, where appropriate, the AAA’s
Supplementary Procedures for Consumer Related Disputes
("AAA Consumer Rules"), both of which are available at
the AAA website www.adr.org. Your arbitration fees and
your share of arbitrator compensation shall be governed
by the AAA Consumer Rules and, where appropriate,
limited by the AAA Consumer Rules. If such costs are
determined by the arbitrator to be excessive, we will
pay all arbitration fees and expenses. The arbitration
may be conducted in person, through the submission of
documents, by phone, or online. The arbitrator will make
a decision in writing, but need not provide a statement
of reasons unless requested by either Party. The
arbitrator must follow applicable law, and any award may
be challenged if the arbitrator fails to do so. Except
where otherwise required by the applicable AAA rules or
applicable law, the arbitration will take place in Santa
Barbara, California. Except as otherwise provided
herein, the Parties may litigate in court to compel
arbitration, stay proceedings pending arbitration, or to
confirm, modify, vacate, or enter judgment on the award
entered by the arbitrator.

If for any reason, a Dispute proceeds in court rather
than arbitration, the Dispute shall be commenced or
prosecuted in the state and federal courts located in
Santa Barbara, California, and the Parties hereby
consent to, and waive all defenses of lack of personal
jurisdiction, and forum non conveniens with respect to
venue and jurisdiction in such state and federal courts.
Application of the United Nations Convention on
Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and the
Uniform Computer Information Transaction Act (UCITA) are
excluded from these Terms of Use.

In no event shall any Dispute brought by either Party
related in any way to the Site be commenced more than
one (1) years after the cause of action arose. If this
provision is found to be illegal or unenforceable, then
neither Party will elect to arbitrate any Dispute
falling within that portion of this provision found to
be illegal or unenforceable and such Dispute shall be
decided by a court of competent jurisdiction within the
courts listed for jurisdiction above, and the Parties
agree to submit to the personal jurisdiction of that
court.

Restrictions

The Parties agree that any arbitration shall be limited
to the Dispute between the Parties individually. To the
full extent permitted by law, (a) no arbitration shall
be joined with any other proceeding; (b) there is no
right or authority for any Dispute to be arbitrated on a
class-action basis or to utilize class action
procedures; and (c) there is no right or authority for
any Dispute to be brought in a purported representative
capacity on behalf of the general public or any other
persons.

Exceptions to Informal Negotiations and Arbitration

The Parties agree that the following Disputes are not
subject to the above provisions concerning informal
negotiations and binding arbitration: (a) any Disputes
seeking to enforce or protect, or concerning the
validity of, any of the intellectual property rights of
a Party; (b) any Dispute related to, or arising from,
allegations of theft, piracy, invasion of privacy, or
unauthorized use; and (c) any claim for injunctive
relief. If this provision is found to be illegal or
unenforceable, then neither Party will elect to
arbitrate any Dispute falling within that portion of
this provision found to be illegal or unenforceable and
such Dispute shall be decided by a court of competent
jurisdiction within the courts listed for jurisdiction
above, and the Parties agree to submit to the personal
jurisdiction of that court.

20. Corrections

There may be information on the Site that contains
typographical errors, inaccuracies, or omissions,
including descriptions, pricing, availability, and
various other information. We reserve the right to
correct any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions and to
change or update the information on the Site at any
time, without prior notice.

EXCEPT FOR DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF A PARTY’S NEGLIGENCE,
WILLFUL MISCONDUCT OR BREACH OF APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO
EVENT WILL WE OR OUR DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS BE

ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR THE EXCLUSION
OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES. IF THESE LAWS APPLY TO
YOU, SOME OR ALL OF THE ABOVE DISCLAIMERS OR LIMITATIONS
MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU, AND YOU MAY HAVE ADDITIONAL

23. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold us harmless,
including our subsidiaries, affiliates, and all of our
respective officers, agents, partners, and employees,
from and against any loss, damage, liability, claim, or
demand, including reasonable attorneys’ fees and
expenses, made by any third party due to or arising out
of: (1) your Contributions; (2) use of the Site; (3)
breach of these Terms of Use; (4) any breach of your

of Use; (5) your violation of the rights of a third
party, including but not limited to intellectual
property rights; or (6) any overt harmful act toward any
other user of the Site with whom you connected via the
Site. Notwithstanding the foregoing, we reserve the
right, at your expense, to assume the exclusive defense
and control of any matter for which you are required to
indemnify us, and you agree to cooperate, at your
expense, with our defense of such claims. We will use
reasonable efforts to notify you of any such claim,
action, or proceeding which is subject to this
indemnification upon becoming aware of it.

These Terms of Use and any policies or operating rules
